Campus Network Design and Implementation

The campus access layer provides network connectivity to end users by connecting devices such as PCs, printers, and IP phones to the LAN via wired or wireless LAN (WLAN) access points. Access layer switches typically reside in the wiring closets of each building in each campus facility.

This layer Connects all the layers of the LAN design, providing for connectivity between end devices, computing and data storage services located within the data center and other areas, and services within the network. The distribution/core layer serves as the aggregator for all the other campus blocks, and ties the campus together with the rest of the network.

The campus LAN is made up of two main layers:

  • The access layer,
  • The collapsed distribution/core layer
